چکیده

Commentary Critical care providers regularly face decisions regarding timing, dose, formulation, and route of nutrition in heterogeneous critically ill patients. Early enteral feeding individualized to patient energy needs is recommended (1). However, many ICUs do not routinely use indirect calorimetry, and estimates of energy needs may not be met in a subset of patients, particularly those with more severe illness.

Supplemental parenteral nutrition in critically ill patients: a study protocol for a phase II randomised controlled trial

BACKGROUND Nutrition is one of the fundamentals of care provided to critically ill adults. The volume of enteral nutrition received, however, is often much less than prescribed due to multiple functional and process issues. To deliver the prescribed volume and correct the energy deficit associated with enteral nutrition alone, parenteral nutrition can be used in combination (termed "supplementa...

Influence of supplemental parenteral nutrition approach on nosocomial infection in pediatric intensive care unit of Emergency Department: a retrospective study

BACKGROUND & AIMS Nutritional support for patients in the intensive-care unit (ICU) is a part of standard care which promotes medical quality and decreases nosocomial infection. Supplemental parenteral nutrition (SPN) approach (enteral nutrition (EN) combined with parenteral nutrition (PN) when EN alone is insufficient) has become one major concern in nutrition research field. This research aim...

Current clinical nutrition practices in critically ill patients in Latin America: a multinational observational study.

BACKGROUND Malnutrition in critically ill adults in the intensive care unit (ICU) is associated with a significantly elevated risk of mortality. Adequate nutrition therapy is crucial to optimise outcomes. Currently, there is a paucity of such data in Latin America. Our aims were to characterise current clinical nutrition practices in the ICU setting in Latin America and evaluate whether current...

Optimisation of energy provision with supplemental parenteral nutrition in critically ill patients: a randomised controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND Enteral nutrition (EN) is recommended for patients in the intensive-care unit (ICU), but it does not consistently achieve nutritional goals. We assessed whether delivery of 100% of the energy target from days 4 to 8 in the ICU with EN plus supplemental parenteral nutrition (SPN) could optimise clinical outcome. METHODS This randomised controlled trial was undertaken in two centres ...
